We've had a lot of conversations with students at colleges ranging from the gargantuan to the teeny, and there is always lots to learn from what people have to say. To preserve and encourage these discussions, we've decided to come up with a topic of the month, every month, and start talkin.
So without further ado, here's this month's topic (post your answer in a comment below):
"How many hours per week do you work as a student leader during the summer months, and do you get paid?

I received a stipend for the Spring semester, but no one wants to pay me for the summer. I'm working about 5 hours a week now (with no air conditioning, mind you), for $0.00.

When I was a student leader at College of Dupage, I worked 5 hours a week in the summer (as set office hours) and was paid a stipend of around $200.

As the President of Ashland University's American Chemical Society (ACS), I have no hour requirements and I receive no pay either.
As Vice President of Ashland University's Fencing Club Team, I am required to attend certain meetings and our practices but I am not paid for this position either.
For both of these positions, however, I do receive recognition and I am able to place both on my resume (which is just as helpful).

Clubs at Hunter in NYC don't get funding in the summer, we all put in like a day or two a week though. You don't get paid to start a club, but yeah, I agree with Danielle that it's all about how it looks on the resume (plus the experience!)

My SG officers ONLY receive scholarships (the cost of 6 credit hours) and only for Fall and Spring Semesters. However, they are also not required to put in any work during the summer (with the exception of a couple brief meetings). I have not put in any office time at school, but will start off the Fall semester with a good list of ideas for the year and the research to accompany them.

I'm curious about the different amounts that people get paid in different schools and roles. At Hunter, in the Fall and Spring, I received a stipend of $2,000 per semester for being chair/coordinator of a student organization (which comes out to like $8 per hour). Pretty awesome, I think, considering the fact that it was such an amazing opportunity to learn.

I can't say I work a regular # of hours a week, But I'll say 6 for now... a week or two will go by, and then I'm working more the next week. My stipends come per issue.
[ps - yay tania!]

No, I am not really working this summer for Hunter College, save for maintenance of the distribution receptacles for publications and the construction of filing cabinets. Pro bono - can you believe it?

Haha! Filing cabinet construction counts as work!
